February 2023 PenderPOD had a Saturday Morning at the Market campaign to mobilize our island to stop the devastating anchorages.
The Port of Vancouver is currently working to make the Southern Gulf Islands anchorages into a PERMANENT “OVERFLOW PARKING LOT”.
The Federal government is abdicating its responsibility to PROTECT OUR OCEANS AND THE ENVIRONMENT.

Bob Turner of Bowen Island led Lisa Baile, Peter Pare and Kelly Irvine on a kayak trip to St. John's Point on Mayne Island from Hope Bay, Pender Island. Eagles soared overhead and mink scampered away as they rounded St. John's Point. They enjoyed a leisurely picnic and then walked among the ancient juniper, colourful arbutus and flowering nodding onions. Little Liizard Island was close by so they checked out the intertidal life. It was an exciting return trip crossing the wild riptides of Navy Channel.

Bob Turner of Bowen Island gave a fascinating descriptioin of the ice age events around the Salish Sea. We also enjoyed his recent film showing the importance of herring to the ecosystem, including the salmon and orcas.
Go to Our Salish Sea to learn more and see any of his inspiring films.

If you're feeling blue or bleak
Take a trip to Fairy Creek
There you'll find
Peace of mind
And old-growth forests we must keep

The Pender Island Conservancy (PICA) celebrated Earth Day with a well-attended beach clean-up. PenderPod was at the drop-off point with a display and information table. PICA did such an incredible event, complete with music, food, and good cheer. The Pender Pod banner was flying high while we danced up a storm.

Orca Tile project was a way to keep the community involved during the pandemic. After our Orca flag project which commemorated the Orcas that have died, this project was to celebrate all the living Orcas. A group of youth in the Community Resource Program assisted in putting together kits of paint and tiles.
Visit our Whale Tile page and see all the tiles and read the reports that have been written by participants in this project.

Prayer flag for Orcas
This project was for community to decorate a prayer flag from Tibet to commemorate the whales that have died. The community members who participated researched information about their whale and wrote a report or poem for the whale they chose.

Natasha and her family completed 7 flags. Here she is holding Luna and Hugo.
Sasha, a member of the Kawakatoose First Nation, did two prayer flags for the project. Here she is with her little sister holding her flag for Samish (J14). She also did one for Tanya(L5). Go to the prayer flags and click on her flags to read her story.
